o Introduction to History of Feminist Action
o Feminism, a working definition:
o Establishment and protection of equal and equitable (note: two different
terms) social, political, economic, and cultural rights.
o Equality wants to achieve a blanket of sameness
o Equity wants to tailor to specific needs (i.e., women tend to be poorer
than men; women tend to commute longer than men; and women tend to
live longer than men).
o Goals of feminism:
o Opportunities for all women and girls.
o Safety from gendered and other violence.
o Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining,
establishing, and defending equal and equitable right for women.
o Feminism advocates for and supports the rights and equality of women.
o Feminism supports for all and is intersectional.
o Terminology
o Feminisms
o By the 1990’s, it was recognized that feminism was not ‘one thingbut that a
range of feminist positions and theories exist.
o Some positions challenge the thinking of others.
o Distinctions and disagreements develop from what is believed to be the cause or
problem of women’s oppression and/or what is believed to be the best solution
to women’s oppression.
o Sexual difference or social structure? Role of religion? Integrated with
racism and other oppressions? Etc.
o Women
o There is NOT a single experience of being female. “women” varies by class,
racial, identity, ethnicity, history, skin colour, physical abilities, age, etc.
o Not limited to only those assigned female at birth.
