Conquest of tropical diseases: quinine as a medical cure for malaria. 1870"s to early 1900s, european powers divided africa: motivated by economic and political competition, raw materials: ivory, rubber, minderals, diamonds, and gold, mapped and divided. British: secured suez & egypt, later sudan and e. africa, also colonies in west africa.
