HSCI 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Henry Morgentaler, Sepsis, Contraceptive Sponge
Document Summary
Male (not as much as female) & female condom, abstinence are the three contraceptives that can prevent sti"s. Early methods: irritants that could case bacterial infection, infertility, inflammation and small tears that increase greater sti transmission. Silphium: plant that had properties to cause birth control, some today but used almost to extinction: used as tampons, ingested, now used as cyrenian currency. Condoms: prevent pregnancy: use of animal skin would not stop bacterial infection. Intracervical device: potentially cause more irritation and also creates a better passageway for bacteria to enter uterus sepsis. Contraceptive sponge: sponge soaked in various fluids to put in vagina to soak up any sperm in the ejaculate. These methods are noticeably more for women to use = uncomfortable!! Female condoms are much better at preventing sti"s because it also reduces skin to skin interaction.
