HSCI 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Bone Marrow, Hyaline Cartilage, Shoulder Girdle
Document Summary
Lecture 6 hsci 100: organ systems of the human body (skeletal & muscular) Skeletal system: attachment for muscles, protects organs, stores calcium and phosphorus, produces blood cells, muscular system, moves body and maintains posture. Internal transport of fluids: generation of heat. Skull - frontal bone, zygomatic bone, maxilla, mandible, parietal bone, temporal bone, occipital bone: pectoral girdle - clavicle, scapula, humerus, rib cage - sternum, ribs, costal cartilages, vertebral column, pelvic girdle - coxal bones, sacrum, coccyx. Epiphysis - ends of the bone made mostly of spongy bone with red bone marrow. Diaphysis - shaft of the bone made of compact bone and medullary cavity filled with yellow bone marrow. Articular cartilage - hyaline type of cartilage found on the ends of long bones. Red bone marrow - makes blood cells, found in spongy bone and flat bones. Periosteum - living, outer covering of fibrous connective tissue. Important cells in bone growth, remodelling and repair:
