HSCI 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Hans Selye, Tachycardia, Cortisol Awakening Response
Document Summary
Universally, there is no accepted definition of stress. Hans selye, studies biological effects of stressful stimuli: general adaptation syndrome (gas): 3 phases. Body recognizes stressor so it goes into a state of alarm. Body feels exhausted because resources are depleted. Body is unable to function properly: youre gonna get ideas, keep track of those ideas, 5 years later some of those ideas will come back to you in different ways, stick with your guts. Sam system (sympathetic-adrenal-medullary) & 4 consequences: increase secretion of epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine ( stress hormone , increase heart rate and blood pressure, sweating, restricted blood vessels, suppressed cellular immune function. Increased heart rate and blood pressure: variations in heart rhythm (sudden death, neurochemical imbalances. Hpa (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) & 3 consequences: anterior pituitary release acth (stimulate production of cortisol, acth gets the cortex to produce cortisol and other glucorticoids, cognitive decline in pathogenic processes. Insulin resistance sugar level gets too high.
