Discussion:
-Up to 40% people see a physician but not due to medical
oPlacebo response can save time and money
oNeed authority to say placebo actually works
oI.e. tapping hand to stop pain like placebo as physician say it does work (re-
progress mind)
-Placebo is very complex
oWhat can you do with it?
Help people?
Relation?
-Placebo over time can get addicted
oActs on symptoms
-Take drug is it side effect or placebo?
oAlways have placebo response
oWorks better
oDepends on the drug
Get affect of the drug
Placebo response will increase effect on symptoms
oCan’t know which experiment as you need evidence from drug
-Doctor can’t prescribe placebo to patient without telling them
oMust be ethnical to the person
-Some use CAM and aren’t honest about it
oJust taking people’s money
oPlacebo is cheap
oPerson feels better
But all that aren’t ethnical!
-People believe in it despite the fact that there is no evidence
Homeopathy:
-Aka homeopathic medicine
-Alternative medical system developed in Germany more than 200 years ago
-2 Unconventional Theories:
o“Like cures like”
o“Law of minimum does”
-In USA 2012 NHIS
o5 million adults and 1 million children used homeopathy in the previous year
2012
-IN 2007 NHIS (USA)
o$2.9 billion for homeopathic medicine and $170 million visits to homeopathic
practitioners
-Homeopathy treatment are individualized or tailored to each person
-Not uncommon for different people with the same condition to receive different
treatments
oHard to study as lots of variation

HSCI 140
-Research on homeopathy
oNothing
oStudies are flukes
Science world as no evidence or support
Not consistent with physics and chemistry
-Side effects and risk
oHighly diluted has substantial amount of substance
oDangerous substance not just high dilution (iron)
oReplacing an effective conventional treatment with an ineffective homeopathic
one can cause adverse effects some of which may be serious
I.e. immunization to child not correctly
oNo evaluation of safety or effectiveness
Safety issues (Not ethnical)
Homeopathy Video Discussion Main points:
-Not just for symptoms
-Have your nature fight what life gives you
-People buy as some aspect are interesting
-Biomedical model: lifestyle
-Lack of evidence so don’t fund it
oEvidence is anecdotal and subjective
oHard to study even with evidence
-Justice: Animal and children response
oPlacebo effect
oRelational as animal response to people’s feelings
-Responsibility of media (i.e. cancer)
Ayurveda Medicine (aka Ayurveda)
-Key concepts: universal interconnectedness (among people, their health and universe)
oBody’s constitution (prakriti) and life forces (dosha)
-Ayurvedic physicians prescribe individualized treatments including compounds of herbs/
proprietary ingredients and diet, exercises and lifestyle recommendations
-Safely of Ayurvedic Medicine:
oMetal and minerals
o1/5 of it contains metal exceeding standard acceptable daily intake
takes long time may have serious disease
oregulated as dietary supplement in US, but not same requirements in other places
in terms of safety and efficiency
oCleaning technique not very useful, special diet, massage (probably works) may
have side effects
-Status of Ayurvedic Medicine Research
oEvidence is limited
Some evidence in lab but no studies on human level
Requires evidence!
Naturopathy (aka Naturopathic Medicine)
-19th century in Germany
