HSCI 140 Lecture 2: Lecture 2
Document Summary
Beliefs is something one is taught, whereas faith is something one establishes upon themselves (there are many ways of thinking about this topic). Beliefs can be tested whereas faith cannot: ex) yoga can be tested; alternative medicine to an extent cannot be tested. Faith is a strong belief whether it based on evidence or not. Sometimes our beliefs are so strong, that we don"t care about whether evidence proves it wrong. Scientific evidence is something that can be proven/experimented with. Evidence that could either support or counter a scientific hypothesis or theory. If there are no studies, it does not mean that there is no evidence or not true (article 1). In some cultures, evidence comes from different places: ex) for some people evidence comes from elders. Scientific evidence is sometimes very socially and culturally bound. Medicine is very evidence based and this is questioned in the second paper.
