Kalichman 2003 (hiv testing attitudes, aids stigma, and voluntary hiv counselling and testing in a black township in cape town, south africa) Individuals not tested or tested but don"t know results yet had significantly more negative testing attitudes than individuals who were tested, and knew results. Also demonstrated greater stigmas, ascribing greater shame, guilt and social disapproval: knowing test results was not related to stigmatizing beliefs. Negative attitudes towards hiv testing may pose barriers to learning one"s hiv test results. Not seeking vct is more of a function of social barriers to getting tested, particularly aids stigmas, than a lack of perceived value of getting tested.
