Are extremely important aspect of our cultures, we learn through world through narratives. Bordwell & thompson - defined narrative as chain of events in cause-effect r/s occurring in time & space. Narrative construction relies on viewer to pick up cues, anticipate action, recall info. Narrative form tells story & story delivers message at end. When 2 or more events occur in way that one event is result of another, they have cause & effect r/s. Absence of causality, time, space in story. A man tosses and turns, unable to sleep. Random string of events hard to understand as story. We have trouble grasping the narrative b/c unable to determine. New description of same events causal/temporal context.
