IS 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Comparative Advantage, Andre Gunder Frank, Import Substitution Industrialization
Document Summary
Economic, social and political underdevelopment in the g. s may be influenced by a variety of factors, and is unique to each country. Gdp is not necessarily an indicator of development - wealth distribution may still be extremely unequal, and may impact access to basic services. Life expectancy often corresponds with gdp, but not always - may be influenced by lack of public health services and sanitation. Modernization theory: some countries are less able to develop because their culture is less conducive to neoliberal capitalism. Dependency theory: colonized nations are dependent on former colonizers (in the form of multinational financial institutions like the imf and world bank) for loans to develop, but will never be able to produce enough money to break the cycle. Export led industrialization - states invest in industries that produce high value manufactured exports. Andre gunder frank theorized that states that were more intensely colonized are now less developed/have more trouble developing.
