IS 319 Lecture 2: Week 2_ Borders & Migration in History
Document Summary
Migration studies: nothing unusual about people moving, what matters is the issue with the rise of modernity and the growing importance of abstract categories. Started with demography (the study/description of the population) Goes with the nation state itself (think of the questions on a census) it becomes a way to track the population with the rise of the nation state. Why are people moving and doing things this way. There aren"t regular laws like science and math (it all relies on history) All bound by state formation (the consolidation of a monarchical state) Using refugees for the formation of the nation states creates expulsions of people (historical habit for which we are thinking). If a state beings to consolidate = unifying and developing all the institutions that make a state function. Example: tax collectors, some form of police, military [standing army], physical infrastructure [promote trade and commerce within the state], court system and some form of government.
