IS 319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Philipp Spener, Forced Migration, No Reasons
Document Summary
Spener reading - intro: lives on the line. Mexicans have been crossing clandestinely into the states since the 1900s, esp. through tijuana-san diego (1960s) and swimming through the rio grande. Starting in 1990s, states built walls and fences in urban areas and forced migrants into the arizona-sonora desert, where many died. Goals with this book: redress relative inattention from migration scholars in recent decades, shed light on social processes by which migrants enter the us, focusing on the migrants" journey across the border, both the material and symbolic dimensions. 3 hitchhikers show up on highway and get picked up by spener. They made it across the border on their second try and were lucky to be alive still. They made the choice to risk their lives in order to find jobs and money to provide for their families that wasn"t possible back in mexico.
