Document Summary

Class is a set; it"s an experience; it"s a relationship between groups of people, specifically between workers and capitalists, with the middle class or, more specifically, the professional managerial class in between. Class is a power relationship; it is a system, a logic, for moving the wealth that is created by everyone upwards to a few. It is a system that gives some great wealth and power while taking it from others, yet it is not well understood in canadian society. To understand the nature of work and power in society it is necessary to talk about class. However, north american public discourse is rarely about class. More particularly, it is rarely about the working class. Most pundits, commentators, and even many academics mistakenly talk about north american society as being mostly middle class. In the next two weeks we will examine this assumption. Zweig puts forward a definition of what makes a person a member of the working class.
