Sapir-whorf hypothesis a hypothesis attributed to edward sapir and his student benjamin whorf, which comes in two flavours: Linguistic determinism = a hypothesis that states that the structure of a language determines its speakers" thoughts, actions, or worldview. Our cognitive capacities are constrained by the language(s) we speak. Linguistic relativity = a hypothesis that states that the structure of a language shapes or influences (but doesn"t wholly determine) its speakers" thoughts, actions, or worldview.
