MBB 428 Lecture 2: Assignment 2
Document Summary
January 14th, 2019 mbb 428 d100 spring 2019. Interferon stimulates expression of many genes that put the cell into an antiviral state that prevents viral replication. Also, it can also induce apoptosis of the cell or expression of other cytokines. All cells can be infected with viruses so all cells produce prrs: opsonins proteins bind to/coat microbes and enhance the efficiency of phagocytosis. C3b and fc receptors on phagocytic cells recognize the specific opsonins and bind tightly, thus phagocytosis proceeds more efficiently. Antibody binding can inactivate/neutralize viruses and toxins/effector proteins, antibodies bind to complement protein (c1) to activate the classical complement pathway: drawings below. An antigen is a molecule that is recognized by the antibody while the epitope is the specific region of the antigen to which the antibody binds. Epitope: antibodies act as opsonins to enhance phagocytosis and phagocytyic cells present antigen to t cells.
