Document Summary

Kinetics of transfer of na+ through an ion exchange membrane. Experiment date: mar 20th 2015. Submission date: apr 14th 2015. The activity of the hot side and cold side were measured in three different sets. These data were analyzed and plotted as a weighted fit plot to find out about the k constant. The self- diffusion can be seen as mass transfer of a species in the absence of concentration gradient [1]. The rate of na+ ions travelling through the membrane at constant [na+] can provide the self- diffusion coefficient. This particular membrane is commercially produced as nafion and consist of a homogeneous film of completely fluorinated polymer (teflon) [1]. Also, they are impermeable to anions which is another beneficial factor. The procedure of this lab follows as the lab manual of experiment 6, page 63 to 71. Raw data and calculation done on excel spread sheet expt. 6 file. 5. 0e-03 1. 5e-02 2. 5e-02 3. 5e-02 4. 5e-02 5. 5e-02: set #3.
