Descartes is considered the father of modern western philosophy. He is also the investor of analytic geometry, including the cartesian coordinate plane. A famous story about descartes says that he conceived of analytic geometry while sleeping in an oven: myth. In 1649, descartes was invited to the court of queen christina of sweden, whom he tutored in philosophy. She required lessons at 5am, descartes quickly developed pneumonia and died. Descartes was hugely influential during his lifetime, corresponding with europe"s leading intellectuals and royalty. Descartes" meditations on first philosophy and his principles of philosophy were widely read and discussed across europe. Descartes was also a mathematician, physics, anatomy, and other subjects. First published in latin in 1641 and was published along with a set of objections by famous philosophers and intellectuals and descartes replies to those objections. Mediations is written in a unique format; it is not a treatise and it is not a dialogue.
