Phil 100w - lecture 16 - determinism, indeterminism, compatibilism, incompatibilism. Given cause, effect will have to happen. Causal laws + state of world = next state of the world. Says determinism & free will can both be true. Says we act freely if & when we act on our second-order desires. We do what we desire to desire. Ppl who react to things as they come are not acting freely. Frankfurt is right about on both of views, key thing is we take ourselves individual to have life projects & we make indiv choices. There are people who are incompatibilists - who think that determinism incompatible w/ free will but who believe that we have free will & therefore that determinism is false. Problem w/ them - once you deny determinism, then it seems you are saying some events are uncaused & that is no more compatible w free will than determinism is.
