(cid:498)cocktail party phenomenon(cid:499) One of two tasks: ask listener to listen to both messages (cid:498)divided attention task(cid:499) Using (cid:498)shadowing(cid:499): to repeat after the speech, to measure. While at the same time monitoring other irrelevant inputs? (someone says something that catches and intrudes onto consciousness: phrase shadowing: listen to 3 or 4 words and repeat, phonemic shadowing: repeat the sound of the message (harder task) Those that are good at phrase shadowing may remember the unintended message, therefore the harder task may help with the memory test afterwards. Dichotic listening: when two messages are presented one to each ear.
