Lecture 3-Chapter 3: Ideologies
• Ideology-DEFINITION:
-It is a collection of related ideas and beliefs about the government, society and human
nature that motivate and have an effect on political actions.
-Each ideology gives different perspective about the world and each ideology also helps
us in understand how the political world works.
-Most importantly, ideologies provide a vison of how the world should be like and
suggest a means of political actions to achieve their objectives.
-There are many types of ideologies.
❖ WHAT CAUSES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ALL THE MODERN IDEOLOGIES?
➢ European Enlightenment:
-It is a movement that was established in the mid eighteenth century.
-It was established to highlight the power of human-reasoning in order to interpret
and change the world.
-It involves a big shift from a traditional, religious beliefs to a belief in power and
human reason to improve the world.
➢ Industrial Revolution:
- It was established due to the economic and social upheavals and the appearance of
the capitalists.
-More specifically, the rise of capitalism and Industrial Revolution interrupted the
patterns of economic and social-life led to an intense dispute over the desire of
having capitalist system.
-Due to Industrial Revolution, it leads to the development of modern political
ideologies.
➢ French Revolution:
-The French Revolution also leads to the development of modern ideologies.
-The French Revolution happened to challenge authorities that ruled based on
traditions and moral values which are the elites.
-Because of that, the ideology of conservatism was particularly developed as a
response to the French Revolution.
