Finish explaining hobbes" of origin, nature, and legitimacy of the state laws of nature rights of sovereign/sovereignty. How do the definitions tie together: polemical; he wants to show that his opponents" views are mistaken, first principles, once revised, require revising ideas built from them. Once you prove your opponents wrong, their whole argument falls apart (methodological). Hobbes: see state as a bunch of pieces that are related to each other, where the glue can be understood like in science. Natural power: effective abilities that are present in an ability to do something. Instrumental power: an ability to use one"s power productively to produce effects that yield more power. It"s one thing to have a power that lets you do productive things to get you more power. Hobbes" view of power: instrumental power (power-over): getting people to do what you want. However, weakness of instrumental power is through institutions that are agreed by both people.
