Learning objective 1: outline three principles that define the cognitive level of analysis and explain how these principles may be demonstrated in research. Psychologists believe that the mind is useful to model mental processes using an information-processing approach: Info that is examined from the outside world is received and encoded storage and represents this info to ourselves. Info is manipulated and used by the individual, how we output info back into the world to be received by others. Schema theory: assumed to operate through top-down processing; the role of schema (organized sets of associated info) shape perception and can increase efficiency of processing, but can also lead to distortions. Study to demonstrate principle 1: anderson and pichert (1978) Participants then heard a story which was based on 72 points, previously rated by a group of people based on their importance to a potential house-buyer (leaky roof, damp basement) or a burglar (10 speed bike, colour tv)
