PSYC 210 Lecture 1: psyc210 NOTES 1a notation
Document Summary
Notation is, in effect, the language of statistics. For the purposes of this course, there are a few symbols and a few rules that students need to know: Uppercase n number of cases in the population. Lowercase n number of cases in the sample. Note: words or other uppercase letters may be used instead of the x the ith case (or participant) on the x variable summation (i. e. , a mathematical operation; the full notation will indicate what is to be added up) {in this example, sum (i. e. , the x scores). } n (cid:1) Tells user at which data point to end the specified operation. {in this example it is n, indicating that we should stop with the final data point in the sample; it is possible for a different number to appear here. } Tells user at which data point to begin the specified operation.
