Document Summary

We need perception to be rapid and effortless. Top down: more cognitive, higher level, at one-poi(cid:374)t people thought e(cid:448)er(cid:455)thi(cid:374)g (cid:449)as top do(cid:449)(cid:374) (cid:894)(cid:271)ut (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t (cid:271)e too (cid:272)og(cid:374)iti(cid:448)e(cid:895) Bottom up: more sensory driven, ex- touch a hot stove then move your finger away from it. Recognition by components theory/hypothesis (rbc): creating objects out of pieces. Primitive shapes (geons) make up most of everything in the world. Perception is way more bottom up in this theory. Size and depth perception (monocular- can see with one eye) Leonardo window = an early drawing aid (always keeps your head in the same place then painting something) to keep depth accurate. Interposition and occlusion (best depth cue: when things are in front, it gives a powerful cue of how far away the thing behind it is. If objects are closer and farter away but positioned within a background where there are converging lines: ex- row of corn field on a farm.
