Caused by chromosome abnormality (extra 21st chromosome) Risk of down syndrome increases with maternal and paternal age. Key physical features: short, slanted eyes, wide & flat nose bridge, stubby hands/fingers low muscle tone. Kid is overstimulated (same as in autism and other developmental disorders) Inability to process / metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine. Problem of diagnostic overshadowing: perceiving maladaptive behaviours to be function of the developmental disorder.
