Independent self: defining oneself in terms of personal feelings and experiences more common is western. Interdependent self: defining oneself in terms of their relationships to other people more common in eastern. Positive characteristic: western cultures: focus on reasons why they are unique, eastern cultures: focus on characteristics that connect them to others (loyal, kind cooperative etc) fit in and get along with others. The ultimate characteristic: western: self esteem and self confidence, eastern: fitting in and interacting harmoniously with others. Not absolute- things can be seen on a continuum. May be changing over time- more exposure to western culture. Women"s self concepts are more relational and interdependent; focusing more on their close relationships and how they feel. Men"s self concepts are more collective interdependent; focusing more on which social groups they belong to and identify with. Introspection: the process where people look inward and examine their own thoughts, feelings and motives.
