The correction system is responsible for supervising, managing, punishing, and rehabilitating offenders. Not surprisingly, it involves the work of myriad professionals, including mental health professionals. As you will learn in this unit, mental health professionals are intimately involved in the development of risk assessment tools and treatment programs for offenders. Risk assessments are done at numerous stages of incarceration and release. A good risk assessment will include recommendations for risk management; recommending treatment programs that will reduce an offender"s risk of reoffending in the institution and when released into the community. The first canadian correctional institution was built in kingston ontario in 1835 as a provincial institution; it became a federal institution in 1868. By 1890 there were four more federal prisons.
