Person is presumed to be fit to stand trial unless on balance of probabilities he/she is not fit to stand trial. If mental illness is found, assessment consists of interview with accused, administration of an assessment instrument, and evaluators may seek info from third-party resources. Fit-r (fitness interview test-revised): screening device used to assess fitness to stand trial trial. Typical characteristics people sent for fitness evaluation have: male, single, unemployed, living alone, history of contact with justice and mental health systems, diagnosis of major mental disorder.
