Psy 308 - lecture 9 - gestalt psychology. So we need to talk about wundt again. In boring"s (1936) review of koffka, boring says that koffka is committee to. Organization - gestalt principle that large dynamic system more than sum of its parts & such systems are rule among psychological phenomena. Wundt is sometimes said to distinguish immediate from mediate experience. Wundt does indeed talk about immediate experience (as does leahey) but idea of mediate experience is not really wundtian. Some texts say mediate is about mediated experience (e. g. through instruments rather than directly) others say it is about interpreting sensory input, & it doesn"t help us understand wundt. Most important goal of psychology, given wundt"s framework, was explanation of human consciousness. Self-observation produced descriptive classification of conscious experience/outer phenomena, but this is only first stage for psychological science. Second stage - explanation of facts of immediate experience by reference to indirectly known, voluntary controlled cognitive processes, such as attention.
