PSYC 330 Jan 29 Attention and Vision All three selection models are same: • Input  ▯sensory buffer  ▯object recognition  ▯attentional selection  ▯longer term  memory Selective Reading • Different coloured lines or words (red or blue) • Subjects remember physical properties and salient words of the unattended  message/reading • Eye movement tracking tell us that participants for the most part look at the  attended message but they will look at the unattended ones or salient words for  short periods of time Overlapping Stimuli • Neisser – developed overlapping video method: o Hand slapping video + passing ball video o Control: asked to count hand slaps or ball catches o Experimental: Asked to count both ball catches +hand slaps o Results: Overlapping stimuli subjects missed more than a few of  slaps/catches/details, but selective attention to one video counts are quiet  accurate o We learn that humans have inattentional blindness, this is a limitation • Non­sense visual stimuli given (two over lapping shapes) o Rate the pleasingness of one of the figures o Results: Only the shape subjects attended to were remembered even  though they were looking at both o Gaps were not recognized in the unattended  o Head­up display ­ all information about gauges below are displayed on the  wind screen.  Supposed to be safer but our visual attention limitation makes it  less safe The Negative Priming Effect • Lexical decision task – is this a word or not? o Semantic similarity between words in the order of words ask will result in  a quicker response (PRIMING) • Steve Tipper o Control: Asked to identify the bold line object and ignore the dotted line
