PSYC330 April 09 Spatial Attention Deficits Blindsight Right hemi damage = blindness in the left visual space  SENSORY PHENOMENA Still doing visual processing on the blind side of visual field Do really well with force choice: show apple in blind sight and give two options  as to which one is it Sensory impairment but some processing Two visual pathways Eyes to midbrain  ▯superior culliculus (secondary) Eyes to thalamus  ▯visual cortex (primary) Primary pathways is dysfunctional but secondary pathway still intact Cones – precise colour and detail▯ halamus  ▯visual cortex Rodes – not detailed but good at detecting sudden onset of things & motion  ▯ idbrain, superior culliculus, thalamus, visual cortex Can detect motion but not actually aware/see the object Spatial Neglect ATTENTIONAL PHENOMENA People with spatial neglect do not move their heads to coordinate in life COMPENSATORY HEAD MOVEMENTS Anasgnosia – patients underreport their symptoms  ▯better to bring members of the family   Almost always caused by stroke  ▯thrombosis (common), hemorrhage Healthy arteries are flexible, unhealthy are nonflexible
