PSYC 354 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Nonverbal Communication, Joint Attention, Sarcasm
Document Summary
There is no object we give the meaning thank-you" too, it is grounded in social interaction. But it"s deeper meaning implies that the situation is awful, bad, and is asking more than what are you literally doing. If we take the surface label for a statement, we can miss the meaning in the situation. Therefore, words are more than labels: criticisms: pauses in conversations have meaning, pauses aren"t words, yet they convey meaning. If words only carry meaning because they"re labels for things, then a lack of using words shouldn"t have meaning. Saying 5 slabs" means many things depending on the speaker or the context. For the builder, it could mean that you require 5 slabs for use. As a helper, 5 slabs" might mean that they have 5 slabs in their possession: really, context and speaker are important; meaning is not attached to representations.
