Chapter 12: social cognitive development ii: social interaction and social understanding. 2 dimensions that in uence the system in which children develop: the children"s characteristics and their social environment. Important to examine social experience and how it in uences social cognitive development. In uence of the social context on the development of social understanding (longitudinal studies by judy dunn) Children who experience cooperative interaction with their siblings were more advanced in false belief understanding at 48months. Children who lack such typical social experience (grow up in orphanages tend to have autism-like symptoms) Children growing up in lower socioeconomic circumstances are delayed in false belief understanding. Children from poor countries are found to lag 3 or more years behind western children (same as with false belief understanding) Culture has an effect through the form of social interaction children experience. Different family experiences such as family size and amount of talk.
