Lect 2, ch2; models of development: nature & nurture. Geriatrics: medical study, taking care of the elderly population. Biological age: age of your organs, physiological functioning. Social age: social roles you played in life, and whether you feel socially younger/older (eg: a student at 40yo) Key concepts in the study of the lifespan. Life span perspective: emphasize continuity of dev from childhood to old age. Contextual influences: life span change is a function of nature and nurture. Developmental science: need to look at multiple factors in development. Geriatrics is the medical specialty which aging is the main focus. Concept of niche-picking suggests one type of interactive effect: when genetic and environmental factors influence your life (more so for kids) Kids are active (not passive as the parent tells them what and who to hang out with) Eg: dancing lessons--they picked a niche/an area where they can thrive and do well. Good to find something that the child can interest them.
