Psychoanalysis was the first formal theory of personality it"s three theories at one:1. theory of personality, 2. theory of pathology, 3. theory of therapy it"s practical: highly systematic. Freud"s passionate and sexual attachment to his mother initiated the concept of oedipus complex. Jean martin charcot pioneer in hypnosis for treatment of hysteria (disorder of emotional excess: influence on freud, freud began to develop theory about origin of neurosis, motivated freud for the possible sexual basis of neurosis. Neurosis: common term for broad category of mental illness. He believed early sexual traumas in childhood caused neurotic behaviour in adulthood. Freud cocaine problem: user and endorsed it as a cure for mental illness. Psychic determinism: everything we do has a cause, no free will. Instincts: mental representation of internal stimuli (e. g. hunger, sexual desire) that drive a person to action. Internal stimuli (e. g. hunger) (generates psychological energy) instinct (instinct for hunger) (psychic energy) action (search for food)
