Jean martin charcot pioneer in hypnosis for treatment of hysteria (disorder of emotional excess: influence on freud, freud began to develop theory about origin of neurosis, motivated freud for the possible sexual basis of neurosis. Neurosis: common term for broad category of mental illness. He believed early sexual traumas in childhood caused neurotic behaviour in adulthood. Freud cocaine problem: user and endorsed it as a cure for mental illness. Psychic determinism: everything we do has a cause, no free will. Instincts: mental representation of internal stimuli (e. g. hunger, sexual desire) that drive a person to action.
