PSYC 389 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Social Comparison Theory, Complete Control, Learned Helplessness
Document Summary
Efficacy: judgment of how well one can execute a course of action (can i do it?) Outcome: judgement after an action is performed, if it will cause certain outcome (will it work?) Both expectancies must be high before behaviour becomes energized/goal directed/sustained over time. Perceived control: how the self can exert control (involves the self, action, and control) Self-efficacy: individual"s belief that they have skills to perform or cope with various situations. People need to be adaptive because circumstances are always changing/can be stressful when performing an action. Doubting one"s ability makes surprises/setbacks/difficulties create . anxiety/confusion/negative thinking/aversive physiological arousal and bodily tension. Physiological state: abnormal physiological state is private/attention grabbing message that contributes to one"s sense of inefficacy: causal direction between efficacy and physiological activity is bidirectional: Inefficacy heightens arousal & heightened arousal fuels perceived inefficacy. Look at this good graph to help conceptualize what we talking about here.
