Foundation: mental health isn"t just absence of mental illness, is integral to overall health: state of well-being, realize own potential, can cope w/ normal life stresses, can work productively, can contribute to community. Aim of services: promote personal recover, social inclusion. Foundation of good treatment: good relationship: inc. meds meds are quality of life goal directed, not just symptom relief directed. Goal of treatment: not just treat, but help have better lives. 3 experts in mental health in doctor"s office: doctor and patient. Medications should be used: esp. major mental illness, double bind: psychiatrists don"t have time for therapy, clients can"t afford therapy. Recover: satisfying, hopeful, contributing life, even w/ limitations from mental health issues. Talk therapy not in psychiatry need psychologists available to all. Many wait months to see psychiatrist, but psychologist would still be good. Dsm: symptom based, error-prone medication changes, lacked validity, based on social norms, subjective judgments, medicalizes responses to enviro/experiences.
