Week 10: the social in our relationships with others. Dividuals in western society, we imagine ourselves as separate individuals. However, social relationships in papua new guinea differ. Social relationships: dating and courtship, marriage, kinship: in england, many things are inherited and right to claims in status and nobility. Born into family: siblings, parent-child, intergenerational: first child, boy or girl may matter, have consequences and vary from place to place, may not have parents, nuclear family parent generation and child generation. An initiation ritual with 3 stages: person detached from his or her group or family (wedding, the liminal period, the transitional stage (honeymoon, the person brought back into society transformed into somebody differently. Social ideal of a single unit, harmonious and working towards joint interests. Yet, anthropology has also shown conflict in the family: between spouses (divided interests, use of money, time, labor) between children, between adults-children.
