Week 2: the sociological imagination
Sociology
• Systematic/scientific study of society
• The social science that studies the development, structure, and functioning of human
society
• Particular focus on:
o Interaction: the ways we relate to each other
o Social relationship: stable patterns of meaningful orientations
o Social structure: any enduring and predictable pattern of social relations that
constrains and shapes people's behavior
o Social institutions: Structures that are governed by established patterns of
behavior (standardized interactions)
o Constraining power: the ability of a social institution to control people's
behaviour and increase their obedience to social norms
o Transformative power: the tendency of social institutions and social
experiences to radically change people's routine behaviour
Sociology imagination
• The ability to perceive the underlying societal causes of individual experiences and
issue; and to think outside the accepted wisdom and common routines of daily life
• Pull away from the immediate situation and think form an alternative point of view
