SA 316 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Neocolonialism
Document Summary
The article by kanemasu (reading 9. 1) is described briefly in this module"s textbook chapter. Unlike some post-colonial interpretations of tourism, this one avoids a blunt-instrument approach and acknowledges the ability of lower-level fijian hotel workers to exercise some degree of control over their working lives. They are shown to be subordinate, but not helpless. Reading 9. 2 by sharpley and knight offers a detailed examination of tourism in cuba because this sector developed from pre-revolutionary times up to the present. The stages of cuban tourism development are well known and other writers have discussed much of the information presented here. However, the historical approach in this article is commendable and its conclusion that cuban tourism would not necessarily benefit from an influx of american tourists should the island"s communist system collapse runs counter to conventional wisdom.
