Lecture 4 – January 28th 4/19/2013 1:27:00 AM Sneetches Star can represent the stars that Jewish people had to wear Deviance Crime: the violation of society’s formally enacted criminal law Deviant but not criminal: Talking while the prof is talking Biology and deviance Believed that we can find deviance from biological differences The social foundations of deviance What is deviant in one society is normal in another Aka deviance varies with cultural norms Cultural universals: taboos against incest, what we find humorous Deviance varies based on cultural norms and based on history Nelson Mandela People become deviant as others define them that way Norms and deviance involve social power Structural functionalism Durkheim Merton and strain theory Strain theory suggests that everyone measures things the same way  wealth/success Main critique is that not everybody shares the same ideas of how to evaluate right and wrong
