In thinking about the role of women in society, we necessarily have to think also about men and their role - since the two are inextricably linked. So although our primary focus is on women, we will also be studying the idea of gender as an essential organizing principle within society. A number of dramatic social changes - starting in early 20th c and accelerating since wwii - have transformed women"s lives e. g. - women"s ability to control their own fertility. Women"s increased access to education and employment (bringing the possibility of economic independence from men) Equal opportunities legislation to make women equal to men law in. And have prompted us to question long-established assumptions regarding the appropriateness of differentiated social roles for women and men. Since the 1970s, research on gender (esp. on the position of women in society) has increased enormously. It has also become a major topic for study in the sociology curriculum.
