Document Summary

Controls the body"s activities: receives info from the external & internal environments, analyzes & processes this info, brings about the appropriate response. Sensory neurons receive info from adjacent cells or tissues and send toward the brain or spinal cord for processing: afferent neurons. Motor neurons carry messages away from the brain or spinal cord to muscles/glands telling them how to react: efferent neurons. Brain: cerebrum, conscious thoughts, voluntary movement, pain perception, cerebellum, spatial recognition, balance, coordination, posture, motor skills, brainstem, controls respiration, circulation, digestion, urination, body temperature regulation, thirst & hunger, (hypothalamus) links nervous system with endocrine. Cranial nerves: arise from the base of the brain & brain stem. Spinal nerves: arise from the spinal cord through openings between vertebrae. The nerve pathway involved in a reflex action: involuntary, protective mechanism, sends a quick message to spinal cord instead of the brain.
