Week 8: Human Resources
March 8th 2017
Notetakers: Monique and Devon
HI welcome back from break week. Some of the students call it not reading week or project
week. That is why I get mine out of the way early. Welcome back good to have you back!
FYI for those of you that are unclear, not that it’s a big deal but it’s week 8 officially. Your grades
are on slate. Today you can see how bonus marks were incorporated I also want to give you an
opportunity to give me feedback anonymously on a start/stop/continue sheet.
I’m also introducing the assignment today and our entire day and focused on chapter 5. If I
wrote on your exam ‘see me’, please do. i'd love to rectify the groups if there are any issues.
Career Services will join us in week 10 or 11 bring in your resume and this will be a good
opportunity. The services what are offered here are superior, they have optimum software that
helps you prepare. I'm willing to give you my class time for that.
HRSA on March 14th from 11-3. This is a great opportunity to network as we’ve talked about.
There will be lots of associations and government agencies you can speak to and get a feel.
Wear something nice and make a good first impression. You're not looking for a job tomorrow
but this is a good opportunity for you to take the beginning steps.
Any questions? Back to the schedule. We’re at the midway point we have 3 more chapters and
3 more bonus quizzes, one more assignment and one final exam. Your assignment is due week
13 and the assignment is number 2, worth 15% Of your grade. one group assignment for the
group you're working with or if you need a new group see me.
Go to Slate for a moment and let's walk through the expectations here. Overall everyone did
well on assignment one but we could improve. A lot of the improvements are around APA
citation and formatting. I have your rubrics here if you haven't received them.
Assignment 2 is based on recruitment and selection. This is under content> assignments >
assignment 2 in slate.
You're asked to find a job advertisement anywhere you want, online or in a newspaper or
anything, maybe linkedin. Find a job advertisement not a description. Your group will take this
ad and based on content of course we will critique it. We will discuss effective characteristics of
a job advertisement next week. I’d like you to keep the job at a level where you or your peers
would apply to. I want you to appreciate and understand it.
Within that ad we will highlight two critical skills or qualities the company will be looking for.
Selection criteria. Those help us determine a selection process. This will make more sense after
chapters 5 and 6. We will discuss recruitment methods as well.

After that step 5 a selection process, and which steps will be most appropriate for you. For the
next four weeks today we will discuss recruitment, selection and while we do that you can start
applying it to your assignments.
What does APA really look like? Struggling means getting over this and then learning it’s a
learning opportunity. We don't know all the content yet but it will make more sense later
At break make sure I know of any group issues and i'll try to rectify those.
Of, by the way if you're following along go to Module 5
For the next 10 minutes i'll pass out your exams and while we do that there is a stop/start/
continue. This is voluntary and I don't want your name on it. If you want to provide constructive
comments please feel free to. Also give me some feedback on the exams.
So fill that out, you know “stop talking so much Angela” well don't say that. You can say that if
you want. Under “start” you can make some suggestions. Under “continue” you can say ‘wow
Angela this works so well for me please continue to do this..” and when you are done please
fold it in half and put it on the middle table. I'll collect them throughout the day.
While this is happening please read this article “Canada’s Got Talent” as we will need to apply it
to our lesson today.
MC out of 50, fill in the blanks out of 10. Short answer out of 10 and your total out of 70. BQ
stands for bonus quiz. 5 if you did the bonus quiz, plus 2 if you did the presentation, plus 1 if you
answered this question. Please calculate these, add them up in case I made a mistake I was
drinking lots of scotch while marking. Just kidding.
Okay everyone is somewhat familiar with recruitment. Where I'd like to take it is to a strategic
level. Let’s talk about this, where recruitment stands in respect to the model. The 5 functions of
HR we’re in the Attracting HR function.
We’re trying to always look towards achieving objectives. We need to know the legal
requirements (Including diversity) and job analysis. I know we spent very little time on this.
For the second half you get to look forward to recruitment, selection and performance appraisal.
Keep in mind each of these are different courses if you go forward with HR. This is just a bread
overview of all of these topics.

I know that is comical but really recruitment was like that. Let’s do a quick brainstorming, what
does recruitment mean to you?
S: Hiring!
T: What does it look like? What’s involved?!
S: A lot of interviews !
S: Review qualifications!
S: Evaluation person !
S: Joining a team!
S: Job boards !
S: Research for a job !
S: Research websites!
S: Networking!
S: Employee referral !
S: Walk-in!
So our job is to find the right candidate, I would rather have one apply who is the best fit then a
100 apply who are not. Choosing the right recruitment method is important, we will talk about
the methods of recruiting next week. What do you think is the most popular method today?
!
S: Online!
T: Anything specific? What do you think is the most effective today in finding that job for
you?!
S: LinkedIn!
T: Yes, what do you think is even better?!
S: Employee referral? !
T: Yes, it is the most credible, if you are going to stand up for a person then absolutely I will
consider you
What are these calls? Interviews, questions, reviews, what are these? !
S: Selection!
T: Yes, brilliant!
It is different than recruitment, in between recruitment and selection we have to build a pool of
applicants.
Then we have constraints so that would be extra skills, shifts that are not desirable, location etc.
Sheridan even has a day where you can post a professional photo on LinkedIn. So what we are
going to do now, recruiting is all about marketing, how does it have a marketing flare. So I am
going to show you a quick video on what strategic recruiting looks like.
!
(Video)
So when we think about our labour market we have three generations in our labour market. We
have baby boomers, millennials and generation X. So when we think about recruiting we need
to think about active job seekers and passive job seekers. Active job seekers are actively
seeking it. What do you think passive job seekers are? They are people who are already
employed but if something better comes along they might consider it, you have to search them
out.
