Instrumental or traditional scientific knowledge sometimes isn"t enough. Functional literacy: ability to read and write, ex. Interactive/communicative literacy: derive meaning and apply to changing circumstances, ex. Critical literacy: being able to critically analyze information and use it to have greater control over life events, looking at social determinants of health, what limits people, ex. A subset of health literacy: one of many literacies (financial literacy, physical literacy, musical literacy, etc. It"s too easy to say that food insecure people are food insecure because they don"t know how to budget or prepare food . There is emerging evidence that even when people do what the skills, they are still food insecure due to the fact that food is not affordable. You can have someone who is very food secure, but may have low food literacy and vice versa. It is the combination of both that really makes up food literacy.
