PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Groupthink, Psych, Iceberg
Document Summary
Research shows that most bystanders do not intervene. Ex: the case of kitty genovese, when she cried out for help three times, no one came to her aid. Another example: there are about half a billion people on earth who do not have food, leaving. There are 4 factors that influence the likelihood of someone intervening: the number of other bystanders around. Less people = more likely: the expertise or competence of the person intervening. If there is someone drowning and you are not a strong swimmer yourself, then you are not very likely to help, whereas you would be more likely to jump in if you were a lifeguard or a competitive swimmer. In the kit- ty genovese case, if you were trained in martial arts, or had policing/military skills, you would have been more likely to go against someone with a weapon.
