Anth 3460 27/11//15 stress, hierarchies, and health. These things can cause huge stress reactions as a result of what we have to deal with, and the way we react to stress. The whitehall studies: british civil servants managing the government those at the top live longer. Hans selye general adaptation syndrome three stages: homeostasis, alarm, resistance (heart rate, tension go up, digestion, immunity go down), exhaustion - turn off all non-essential functions homeostasis: synonymous with balance. Biology of the stress response: biological changes that enable the body to focus all its energy on immediate survival mobilization of energy, increased cardiovascular tone, and suppression of digestion, growth, reproduction, and the immune system. Homeostasis: systems in the body have optimal set points allostasis (the new terms) recognizes that there is not one singular optimal set point. Stress: stressor anything physical/psychological that activates the hormonal cascade/stress response stress response hormonal reaction (research this) Acute physical stressors: e. g. animals something attacks you.
