BIOL 1050H Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Falx Cerebri, Dura Mater, Medulla Oblongata
Nervous System Part 2
Brain landmarks
• Rostral
• towards the nose
• Caudal
• towards the tail (or in our case,
the spinal cord)
Major brain regions
1. Cerebrum
• 83% of brain volume
• 2 cerebral hemispheres, gyri and
sulci, longitudinal fissure, corpus
callosum
2. Cerebellum
• 50% of neurons
• Second largest region, located in
posterior cranial fossa
3. Brainstem
• what remains if cerebrum and
cerebellum are removed:
Brainstem = entire brain – (cerebellum + cerebrum)
Major components:
1. Diencephalon (?) – part
of forebrain sometimes
included
2. Midbrain
3. Pons
4. Medulla oblongata
Meninges
1. Cranial dura mater: • Outer periosteal layer – like periosteum of cranial bones
• Inner meningeal layer– continues into vertebral canal and forms dural sheath around
spinal cord
• Folds inward to extend between parts of brain
• Falx cerebri – separates cerebral hemispheres
