Maurice duplessis (premier of quebec; 1936-1939, 1944-1959: started as a lawyer, became premier as the leader of the union naionale, emphasis stability. Worked with catholic church: support from rural quebec, didn"t care about the educaion system, let it be run by the catholic church. Immigraion: inlux of foreign capital, rise in manufacturing, largest jobs are in the service sector, waning church inluence. Problems with duplessis: ani-labour, corrupion, ignored urban concerns, blatant disregard for parliamentary procedure, failed to accept federal funding to improve social and educaion programs, hired civil servants based on poliical support, disregard civil liberies. Cite libre was founded by intellectual francophones in 1950: advocated secularized and civil liberies, progressive, humanist values, gradual, non-violent reforms, helped breathe new life into the liberal party of quebec. Duplessis dies in 1959, his replacement then dies a couple months later. Period of liberal reforms, lasing 1960-1966, that form basis of modern quebec.
