Ability to think and understand things instead of doing things by instinct or automatically. Ability to learn and understand, to solve problems and make decisions. Build and understand intelligent entities or agents: intelligent because they can learn. Two main approaches: engineering versus cognitive modeling : engineering would be robots and stuff . The goal of arti cial intelligence (ai) is the development of paradigms of algorithms that require machines to perform cognitive tasks, at which humans are currently better. Computational models aim to develop, explore and evaluate theories of how the mind works: how do we think, how do we learn new stuff in human beings then trying to develop programs that model this. The important is not what is done but how it is done. The program must operate in an intelligent manner. An ai system must be capable of doing: store knowledge (to store knowledge learned).
